Health Benefits Of Avocado

Well-known for health and beauty benefits;  avocado is a rich source of natural vitamins and minerals.

1. Vision

Avocado is rich in carotenoids which help eyesight. Carotenoids reach the macula of our eye and light focuses on the macula so we can see.

2. Blood Pressure

Avocado is rich in potassium and low in sodium, so it helps regulate the electrolyte balance and therefore the blood pressure in the body.

3. Cancer

Rich in folate, avocado helps fight against mutations of RNA and DNA, so it is helpful in cancer prevention especially colon, pancreatic, stomach, and cervical cancers.  Phytochemicals from avocado can inhibit the growth of cancerous and precancerous cells, and encourage the proliferation of lymphocytes cells of the immune system.  Folate in avocado helps control some of the side effects, liked nausea, found in some chemotherapy regimens.   Folate is almost always used when methotrexate is used as a chemotherapy agent.

4.  Heart Health

Vitamin E in avocados can decrease the risk of coronary heart disease by 30-40%. Also,  avocado is rich in unsaturated fats such as monounsaturated fatty acids and it can decrease cholesterol level.

5.Osteoporosis

In addition to the well-known benefits of calcium and vitamin D to bone health, potassium also plays a significant role in maintaining healthy bones. Half an avocado gives you 25% of the daily required potassium for the health of your bones.

6. Diabetes

It is recommended that people with diabetes follow low carb, high monounsaturated fat diets to avoid an increase in blood sugar level.  Rich in monounsaturated fats which can improve insulin sensitivity, avocados have a lower carbohydrate content than do apples or bananas. The high level of fiber and fat in avocado causes avocado’s longer digestive rates.  This results in a decreased absorption of carbohydrates- a substance that causes blood sugar to rise.

7. Digestion

Essential for a healthy digestive system, the high fiber in avocado provides bulk for stool and ensures smooth passage of food through your intestinal tract. Additionally,  fiber helps stimulates the digestive and gastric juices for more efficient and rapid absorption of nutrients.

8.  Liver

Research has shown that avocado has potent chemicals which can limit liver damage.. Avocado contains monounsaturated fat which are good fats.

9. Oral

While nothing substitutes for routine visits to the dentist, avocado helps keep a healthy and clean environment in your mouth and relieve bad breath.  The antioxidant and antibacterial flavonoids in avocado can also kill the bacteria causing bad breath. Also, this fruit is proven to link with oral cancer prevention.

10.  Cholesterol

Avocado can help raise good HDL or good cholesterol and lower triglycerides and LDL- the bad aspect of your cholesterol. This fruit is also good for people with hyperlipidemia.

As you see, there are significant dietary benefits to avocado. that avocados provide. It would behoove all of us to add avocado to our diet if it is all right with our physician.
